Greasy spoon Old Forge style

After our hike around Paddlefest GMan wanted to stop at Keys Pancake House. We spotted it on the way into town the night before. Mind you in the parking lot he said the he did not want pancakes! I reckoned they had a fun menu so we ventured in.

It was a wait to be seated place so it was lookin up so far. We were seated and almost immediately a waitress appeared and said “two coffees?”. Mind you I look old enough for a cup of joe but clearly the GMan is a little young. I know we are way west on rt90 but coffee for a nine year old is not on my books. Perhaps they start younger round here I thought and promptly ordered two waters. After the delightfully bad cup I had early I figured I’d last until SB’s on rt90 for a fit.

The other key pointer to our current location was everyone was in Harley Davison garb but the parking lot was full of oversized domestic pick-ups. Also when I ordered a broccoli and cheese omelet there was no mention of what cheese or no question of choice! Perhaps it will be a cow by-product, time will till.

Twenty minutes or so later our food appeared and I’m happy to say it not only looked good, but tasted good also. BTW I believe it was cheddar cheese, but can’t be certain!

Paddlefest wrap up

We came we saw we left. This is a great place if you’re in the market for a new boat. The area is broken up in to two sections. 1. For $20 you can paddle anything on display and you get the twenty off any boat, SUP or canoe you buy, plus the discount that varies. 2. For $5 you get into an area wher you can view and sit in boats and they have a gear area.

This is where we went and there was lots to look at. I found a several boats that will allow me or my better 1/2 and the JMan to go paddling. The gear section was like the gift shop at the exit door of a museum. Only way out was through it! They had hundreds of shoes and a other items, including paddles, PFD’s water proof gear and clothing. We didn’t buy anything these as we were told the main store was in the road out if town.

Signage gone wrong!

Paddlefest 2012 – Update

My day got off to an early start. 4am or so I rolled over at that was that. I resisted the urge to grad my phone and start blogging but I finally gave in.

It didn’t help that the folks in the room below us were running the AC all night, or perhaps it was the heat. In any event I felt like I was trying to sleep in the motor compartment of an express locomotive at full throttle. Thanks for nothing! My guess is they come for even more upstate or perhaps southern Canada and never experienced electricity before. So the AC unit was a real novelty or they couldn’t figure out how to turn it off. Yo, pull its tail out of the wall that will kill the beast. Kinda like my favorite saying ” the issue is somewhere between the keyboard and chair, remove that and all will be right in the world”. BTW they turned it off at about the same time I decided to give up trying to fall back to sleep. It’s an occasions where you want to run into there room with a fog horn or better yet one of those cow bell people rattle at bicycle races, yelling and rattling. Ya, the cow bell would be odd enough so they think I was also a deranged local and this was common practice. All the while I would have a expression that said “this is our normal wake up call”……followed up with “my bad, wrong room”, go back to sleep now!

I hope the breakfast is better than the soundproofing. More later.

It’s later. This is the view from our in the early morning. It sure is nice.

Breakfast of champions. No really, I had some fruit and a bagel prior to the belly bomb. You gota love an in that has the 2012 can-am catalog on display. We are not in Kansas any more…well actually we could be! Here’s the proof.

Paddlefest 2012

GMan and I are going to Paddlefest 2012 in Old Forge NY. Where’s that you might ask….well head west on 90 for….ever, then take a right for Utica and head up 28 for a bit. You’ll get there eventually. The drive was fairly uneventful but fun. We stopped a few times for food, gas and bio breaks….and coffee.

Rest area somewhere on 90.

We saw Amish folks hard at work ploughing a field the old fashioned way. GMan was amazed. I reminded him that they don’t have cable, phones or iPods. He seems to lose interest at that point! I bought a 6 pack of the local brew, Saranac Adirondack Larger. It’s not bad, but not that good either, but I just wanted to wet my whistle, so I guess it worked.

Okay, I’m jacked. More on Paddlefest tomorrow.

Subu got new shoes

So I had the Subu in Manchester Subaru yesterday for a oil change. I figure since I work around the corner for almost two years I may as well check it out. Compared to Subaru of Hudson they had a lot more cars on the lot, but the showroom and repair department are dated. I doped off and got a ride to work. A few hours later I got the call, you know the one, and as I figured they suggested a laundry list of possible way of spending my money!

1. Tires – They said I had 1/32″ of thread on the front and 2/32″ on the back. Why is it not 1/16″? To which I replied “at least there wearing evenly, and I thought to myself….perhaps if I rotate I’ll get a few more miles or they will even out to 3/64” each!

2. Front pads and rotors – Apparently the pads were down to the metal! Well I said the last time they were that bad it sounded like a first year apprentice taking off way too much steel on a fifty year old lathe! It goes something like this “gnaaaaar, clunk, clunk, screech and finally stop, and don’t forget that unmistakable metal on metal smell”. They were not impressed! I was beginning to think they had no sense of humor. The folks in Nashua are much more laid back.

3. Front suspension parts – They yammered off a 1/2 dozen or so parts that were about to fall off the car if I did not replace them yesterday. To which I also respectfully declined and said “they got me to the dealership this morning so things can’t be that bad”. Again I got the unimpressed response.

4. Other things mentioned – Timing belt, done I said. Air filer, change it I said. Transmission flush – no thanks. 125,000 service (for the bargain price of $560.00). I wonder what that covered? I didn’t ask and thankfully they did not offer. Besides I said thats a whole 3k and change away. Remind me in a few weeks, not.

When she finally stopped talking I said let’s change the oil and air filer and call it a day. $70 later I was done.

Got a ride back to the dealer and on the way back to the office I stopped into a parts store and bought pads ( front and back) for $54. I figured thirty minutes in the drive way is better than $360 at the dealership. Of course that price included pads, but mine have character and like me are a little warped and rusty, and pads will wear in soon enough.

On the drive home from the office I stopped into Town Fair Tire on DW highway in Nashua. Brian was working the counter and we discussed the finer point of putting a 2006 Subu Outback up on two wheels while entering any on/off ramp! Brian fully agrees with my style of driving and we decided on a middle of the road summer tire. Not as aggressive as the last set, but V rated tires would be wasted on a family wagon.

One hour later my Subu had new shoes and in proper style I needed to break them in. So out of Town Fair, north on DW and right onto the exit for rt3. I rounded the ramp and beat the suggested speed by 2.24! Ya baby I like these new wheels. If it wasn’t for seven year old suspension I bet I could get my 2.24 up to 2.75!

New shoes.

After a spirited drive home I did a race car pit stop and swapped out the front pads. I’m sure the neighbors think I’m nuts but I was in a “git er done” (Irish version) mode so out came the trolley jack, cranked up the compressor, grabbed the impact gun and raaatattat. Twenty five minutes later I was buzzing down our street making sure I could stop the car. BTW….I could have gotten at least another few months out of the existing pads. I think Manchester Subaru need to lay off the alarmist mode. Settle lads she’ll stop just fine.

Anyhow I figured I was all set for our ride up to Old Forge NY (more on that later) until a friend driving behind me said I had a break light out. A few bucks later that was sorted out. I wonder if the five hundred and something dollar service would have covered that, or would the $2 bulb be an added cost!

Upstate NY here we come.

Kayak trip # 4

Today’s kayak trip was to a local pond called Forge Pond. It was a quick ride as its just around the corner. We put in and set out to find our neighbors who where already paddling around.

We found them and all had a great time. KGirl (neighbors daughter) did great considering this was her first time alone in a kayak.

I was pleasantly surprised that all my hard work buffing out the hull paid off. My boat seemed to cut thought the water with little or no effort on my part.
