Subu in the woods
GMan art show
GMan art show was the other day. All the kids did something on stage and GMan’s class sung several French song including a funny in about a duck that wanted grapes at a lemonade stand.
After all he singing we wandered around to view the art.
First up is a paper mâché mask.
Tea Pot Money Bank.
Art is statement.
Sea Scape.
Electric Box (like the operation game).
Portsmouth NH
U.S.S Albacore
We visited the U.S.S Albacore today. Its a de-commissioned submarine in Portsmouth NH. According to a video we watched at the visitor center its the only sub on dry land open to the public. Go here for more information on Albcore Park.
Here’s a few views of the outside.
The troops!
Twin screws.
Space is cramped and I can imagine it was a busy place with 50 crew members aboard.
Officers mess hall. This room is quite large and is located right off the main galley.
GMan and JMan in the officers bunks.
This room had its own sink! Very fancy accommodations. Here’s the sink down.
The sub was full of crafty ways of storing 10 lbs of you know what in a 5 lb bag! Here’s the same sink in the up position. No conventional drain as the waste water simply ran out the back as you closed it up and them lead away to who knows where in a pipe.
GMan hacking on a typewriter. I’m very happy to say he know what it was. However, I’m sure he was also looking for wifi so he could hack on his iPod.
Quick….turn off the valve next to the tickle switch…you know the one next to the long weight (wait that is). Now this is my idea of engineering fun.
GMan and JMan give it a whirl. Go left at the rock and head past the lighthouse for 3000 miles, look up and you might be in Galway Bay.
Up pericope. GMan checks our the surroundings.
Here’s the view.
Here’s the sonar crew.
JMan trying to close the mid ship hatch.
The hatch.
Galley head, complete with 47 valves, many more switches, knobs and handles. Note the rather lengthy instruction sheet on the back wall.
This was a check list for diving. The diving officer would call the orders, which were repeated back to him and them he’d slide the corresponding plate from from left to right of vis-a-versa.
Hmmm…….I don’t see Domino Pizza listed on the phone extensions options.
This is not the Ritz. What we have here are 14 bunks. The highest number I remember seeing was 34. So with a crew of 50 this was defiantly a hot bunk situation. A lot of the photos were taken with Pano as it was the only way to capture the entire space. To give you an idea of size, the lockers at the end of the below photo are about 20″ wide.
GMan and JMan in engine #2.
A upward view to one of the escape trunks.
Okay boys crank up the mains screws and lets head for home. GMan and JMan perched high in the engine room.
Accidentally photo by a total stranger I asked to snap one of all of us.
Here’s the official one.
Commissioning Pennant flown during trials.
Nice scale model of the sub.
Last but not least the engineer in me had to snap a photo of some drawings in the museum.
JMans art show
Tonight was JMans pre-k art show. We were treated to a few songs and then a presentation of there work.

Geek Squad
While in NJ we decided to upgrade Jess’ moms laptop. The old one was approximately ten years old and I believe my current iPhone has more ram!
We visited the local Best Buy (first mistake) on Thursday evening. After a brief conversation with what seemed like a two year old we decided on a mid level machine that would get the job done and allow room to grow.
The next mistake was asking the Geek Squad to transfer the data off the old PC including all Outlook Express address information. We also bought Office and a printer and were told that it would take no more than a few hours to set everything up.
Jess returned that same evening with old PC and was reassured we’d be all set by noon or so the following day. The idea was to get the machine set up then head back to MA.
Friday came and went and after a visit and several phone calls to the store we were told that the Microsoft server was not responding and they could not register Office. Also, they said “we don’t know how to move over the Outlook Express addresses”. My fist thought was “Google it”. After all you are the experts and we are paying for this service! Figure it out! Those first and second mistakes were really hitting home.
Jess went over to the store again and picked up the machine, keep on mind it’s now Saturday! We set to the printer which was not set as the default which was also requested, I Googled how to get the express data out, did that and imported it into Outlook, got the machine up on the network, changed the password, added an Outlook shortcut to the home screen (something that the Geeks said was not possible!), sent and received a few test email, printed, scanned and Bob’s your uncle.
Hopped in the car and headed north. So the score on Geek Squad is fairly low. My advise is avoid Best Buy and stay away from the Geek Squad.
Poster in-route from NJ. No, I’m not driving!
Gulp this!
March madness day 4
Day 4 was another train ride in NY.
After a short cab ride we emerged in Time Square
On the way down 45th to lunch we passed Jacobs!
Lunch was at 5 Napkin Burger on the corner if 45th and 9th.
Yet another acoustically challenged resturant! However, the food coming out of the kitchen looked good. Here’s my avocado ranch burger….tastes as good as it looks.
After lunch we walked back the two block to the Minskoff Theater and the Lion King. Everyone that has seen this show says its great so we were really looking forward to it. We were in row K on the aisle. If Dickie Rock was on stage we’d be getting wet for sure!
Simply put this is the best live show I have every seem. The sets, costumes, acting and everything else is out of the world. I can’t imagine the back stage work that needs to go into pulling the show off…..wow, did I say wow.
Photography is not allowed in the show and I was a good boy and did not shoot any pictures. The following is a life like model of Rafiki in the lobby.
Here’s Jess and GMan.
It’s all about the Lion. This one is about 15′ wide.
If you get to NY just go see this one.
After the show we wondered around Time Square for a bit.
Pano of Time Square.
Happiness is having to pick which Starbucks to go to! I needed a fix so we picked this one.
Jess found another gem in the “Little Pie Company.
This is one of those just out if the way, but close enough to walk too places. I had the apple pie and again it tasted as good at it looks.
JMan and his Oreo Cup Cake.
GMan and his Oreo.
Prior to another cab ride a fellow student from the BAC tapped me on the shoulder and said “where do I know you from”! Odd how you can be in one of the busiest cities and someone picks you out of the crowd. Apparently Jared and I were in Structures 2 together!
Four in a slightly bigger cab.
