Field trip

Today was JMan’s field trip to downtown Fitchburg MA. We visited the Post Office, Firehouse, Library and the Mayors office. A few years ago I did the same outing with GMan.

First stop was the Gazebo for snacks.

Post Office

Then it was off to the Post Office where all the kids mailed letters home.

IMG_8529.JPG

Then all the kids got to wear Post Office shirts for a tour.

Apparently 1st grade weighs 750 LBS. I wonder how much it would be to mail them all off somewhere!

Moving on!

Fireman John started our tour in the dispatch room where all the 911 calls come to. From there we moved into the garage to check out all the trucks.

After a much needed lunch provided by Chief Jeff we headed back uptown to the Library.

The Library

All the kids received library cards and picked out a book. Here’s JMan signing his library card.

Story time.

Mayors Office

Everyone checked out books and we heading to the Mayors Office.

Mayor Lisa A. Wong came in and talked about all the things the city provides. Then we had a question and answer session and Mayor Wong addressed all manner of questions including one about the gas pipe line that may be coming. Here’s Mayor Wong showing off the new city flag.

All in all it was a great field trip. If you are in the area come help Fitchburg MA celebrate its 250th. Go here for more information.

UNOH 175 – Truck Racing

Lenore scored some tickets to a truck race at The New Hampshire Motor Speedway. I was here years ago so it was fun to check it out again. Nothing like a little southern culture every now and again.

Heading into turn 1.

IMG_8503-0.JPG

The race went off without too much drama. A few spin outs but no fiberglass fragments of crushed steel.

It was a good day and we all had a great time. In the words of a true Nascar fan “That wall made out of concrete too”.

Thanks Lenore!

Littleton MA 300th Parade

The boys and I attended the Littleton MA 300th Parade in Saturday. We got there early and set up our chairs in a nice shady spot. Weather man said 91 and humid!

The parade was lead off by a group of Police motorbikes.

IMG_8337.JPG

Many bands and groups marches including this Navy troop.

IMG_8343.JPG

Followed by a 1/2 track and tank, complete with what looks like a 50 cal.

Here’s a novel way of reusing old fire trucks. This one belongs to Wachusetts Brewing Company.

IMG_8359.JPG

Some of the old valves were replaced with beer taps. There are very good at quenching thirst not fires!

IMG_8378.JPG

Back in the day “long guns” really means long guns. If you ran out if ammo you could just prod the other lad from 4 feet away.

Lexington MA Minutemen presenting arms, aim and fire. Four muskets with 10 feet of us was quite loud. I cannot imaging what a battle field sounded like back when lobbing lead balls was popular.

Many old cars made the journey. Here are a few.

Lastly, here’s a ride we will all get but don’t want.

Fireman’s Muster

Labor Day outing to our local Fireman’s Muster:

Fun with your clothes on!

Got the photos and video back from my Team O’Neil driving school. This is the most fun I had in years….with my clothes on! Nothing like beating on someone else’s car and not worrying about a thing except holding that line!

Special Persons Day at Applewild

Today was Special Persons Day GMans school. His grandmother Lenore and uncle Richie came to visit.

After the show everyone went to an art class.

Lenore hard at work.

Grama bday

This weekend was Lenore’s birthday. We had dinner out and cake at the house.

Go here for our happy birthday song.

Tonight we went to our local Mexican resturant for dinner and the staff sung happy birthday and planted a sombrero!

Green eggs and ham

In honor of Dr. Seuss and the fact that JMan says he wants green eggs and ham every time you asked what he wants to eat.

20140205-075129.jpg

Hmmm…not sure about this one!

20140205-075229.jpg

No ham, but bacon will do.

20140205-075352.jpg

Yum, good food he said.

Alan’s science project – Brewing Beer

With the help of my two underaged assistants JMan and GMan I finally got around to making the beer kit I got last year.

20140120-115147.jpg

Jess gave me the kit and it’s from the Brooklyn Brew Shop. The kit includes everything you need bar a few kitchen items.

The Mash

This stage is like making oatmeal. Add grain to water, stir every 15 minutes for 1 hour and keep within a certain temp. Keeping the temp was hard so I found it easier to remove from heat and replace when I noticed it dropping.

20140120-120539.jpg

20140120-120550.jpg

The Sparge

Strain the mash into a pot. Boil 1 gallon of water and pour over mash 2 or 3 times.

20140120-121735.jpg

Two strainers and a size large pot should work.

20140120-122840.jpg

Mash in strainer.

20140120-122918.jpg

Boil 1 gallon of water and pour over mash, repeat 2 to 3 times.

20140120-130925.jpg

The Boil.

This part is fairly easy. Boil the Wort for 1 hour and all the good stuff.

20140120-131156.jpg

20140120-131208.jpg

Like any good resturant if you knew what went on in the kitchen you’d most likely eat at home. This brew does not look too good but it looks just like the video on The Brooklyn BrewShop web site. So I must be doing something good.

20140120-131537.jpg

JMan add the Hops.

20140120-134543.jpg

20140120-134612.jpg

20140120-134621.jpg

Fill your sink with ice and cool down the Wort to 70 degrees.

20140120-135758.jpg

20140120-141645.jpg

Add Yeast, this is called Pitching, shake, cap, add blowoff tube, insert other end in a sanitized bowl.

20140120-141932.jpg

Keep somewhere dark for 3 days.

Check back in 3 Days for more!
